# EB-1 ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICAN NINTH EDITION  1878

This is four volumes c1878 NINTH EDITION, Vol.A  thru CAN.  A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and General Literature. " The set of 24 volumes "appeared" one by one between 1875 and 1889.
The editor was T.S.Baynes a professor at St. Andrews and a Shakespearean Scholar.  He planned the edition and worked on it until his death in 1887.  The ninth edition, known as the " scholar's encyclopedia," was controversial in its progressive and knowledgeable stance on the scientific and religious debate of its day."

We were given these books over 50 years ago but have to admit that we haven't used them very much.  They are 8" by 11", about 2 3/4" thick and weigh about 5 #each.  All the pages are secure and not loose.  There is 1 torn page in 1 volume mended with scotch tape.  On 2 of the volumes the binding on the spine has come loose at the back cover. The front cover is still attached. This appears to be repairable by gluing it back. Some of the corners on covers and the edges of the spines are worn but intact.  They are bound with a heavy hardcover with a leather or simulated leather spine and corners. The page edges have a scalloped multicolor design which you may be able to see in the pictures.  There is a  label inside the front cover of Vol. 1 that reads, "Subcribers  removing or not being regularly supplied will please address  J.H.Chambers, Publisher, Bookseller and Binder, 305 Locust St. St Louis, Mo. Books bound on the most reasonable terms. All incomplete books filled out on application."

There are brown specks on some of the pages but this is not extensive.  This is probably where I pressed some flowers in tissue paper at one time. They do not interfere with the words or pictures. The pages are NOT brown, brittle or musty.  There are many illustrations that are in black and white. the maps are in color.  There are 14 really nice plates of botannicals.  There are various numbers of quality plates in each volume.  The pictured page of aeronautics are balloons and parachute types of flight. This was the latest in man's attempts to fly in1878.

These antique books should be of interest to the historian, scholar, professor or anyone interested in what the world was like well over a hundred years ago.
